An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy single-loop buckle and separtate folded plate (c. 1200-c. 1400). Meols type 2.
Some of the plate is missing.
The frame is roughly oval in plan and is 'D'-shaped in cross-section, convex at the front and flat at the rear. The narrowed bar is circular in cross-section. The tapering copper-alloy wire pin is circular in cross-section. A small portion of the copper-alloy folded plate survives.
This buckle is green with traces of a darker green patina on the frame.
Frame: length: 10.0mm; width: 14.1mm; thickness: 1.9mm.
Pin: length: 10.8mm; width at loop: 1.3mm.
Overall length: 13.0mm overall thickness: 3.6mm. Overall weight: 2.21g.
A similar buckle frame from London has been published (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 68, fig. 42, ref: 271).
A similar buckle is illustrated in Griffiths et al (2007: 88, pl. 14, ref: 485) where it is dated c. 1250-c. 1350 and categorised as a Meols type 2.
