SCRAPER (TOOL)

Unique ID: DENO-C10441

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete small flint scraper of probably the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age period, dating from c. BC 3000 - c. BC 1500.

The scraper is broadly triangular in shape, with a roughly rectangular cross section. There is no cortex remaining on the surface. The dorsal (upper) surface exhibits controlled working, with minimal retouch (short, sub parallel, abrupt to semi abrupt) along the working edge, this appears to have been done to blunt the edge which suggests the flint was used as a scraper. There are two broad rectangular flake scars, one at the proximal end and one at the distal end. Each scar exhibits shallow conchoidal ripple marks. The ventral (lower) surface exhibits a bulb of percussion and shallow conchoidal ripples.

The object measures 18.0 mm in length and is 16.1 mm wide. It has a thickness of 4.6 mm and weighs 1.4 g.

The object is a mid brown in colour with some darker inclusions. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough souil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. Broadly similar scrapers, from the Late Neolithic, have also been recorded on the database, including WMID-511F47 and SWYOR-1EF7D6. Suggested dates are tentative.
