A lead alloy spindle whorl of Medieval to Post-Medieval date, circa (AD 1100-1600). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is bi-convex. There is a central sub-circular perforation which is 9.03mm in diameter. One face has been decorated with a raised cast design consisting of a repeating pattern of radiating ribs with pellets in between, although the original detail is now very worn. The opposing face has a circumferential rib in light relief, again the surfaces have been worn. The surface of the spindle whorl has a cream to grey in coloured patina.
There are many spindle whorls recorded on the database, (WMID-2A2269) was discovered in the Staffordshire and (WMID-B1DE0D) near Walsall in the West Midlands. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery).
The spindle whorl measures 26.68 mm in diameter, 7.9 mm in thickness and weighs 26.1 grams.
