A fragment of a copper alloy Early Medieval great square headed brooch, dating to the period c.AD 500-600. The fragment is from the head, and is sub rectangular in plan, with worn breaks on all edges. The brooch is decorated with a central raised square, with a series of moulded borders surrounding it. The borders are of differing widths. Most are plain but one is constructed from pellets and another of groups of three lines. The fragment is curved slightly, and one edge is folded back on itself. This, along with its bobbled surface indicates that the brooch may have been burned. The reverse is undecorated, but the remains of the catchplate are present. A black-green patina is on the surface.
The brooch measures 32.52mm in length, 22.80m in width, 4.18mm in thickness and weighs 13.07g.
