Roman (1st to 2nd century) Trumpet brooch: The bow head is oval with a perforated, vertical lug on the reverse. Protruding from the upper edge there is an incomplete, vertical lug which was probably a head plate. The spring and pin are missing. The bow leads from the centre of the head and is semi-circular in section. The upper portion of the bow is decorated with two, elongated vertical triangular cells, each has a trumpet brooch-shaped motif in each. The field around the motif is filled with red enamel.
At the apex of the bow at the midpoint, there are three horizontal ribs above and below a larger moulded, bulbous section.
The lower portion of the bow tapers to a semi-circular foot. This portion of the bow is decorated with co-joined triangular cells which are filled with red enamel. This portion of the bow is twisted and has recent damage. The reverse of this portion of the bow has an incomplete catchplate.
The brooch has a mid to dark green patina with abraded areas.
It weighs 13.67g, and measures 13.78mm wide across the bow head and 53.84mm long.
The brooch is a Trumpet-headed type, possibly a Group D type which dates to the late 1st to mid 2nd century (Bayley and Butcher, 2004; 163).
