An incomplete post medieval copper alloy rowel spur dating to the period AD 1500- 1700. It is incomplete insofar as one side has broken at a length of 17.89mm. The spur measures 107.41mm in total length, 39.94mm in width and weighs 41.15g. On the side of the spur that has broken. there is no loop or buckle attachment. The neck measures 29.74mm in length, and the iron corrosion on the recess indicates a rowel fitting. The sides measure 11.41mm in width, tapering slightly inwards until the terminal, loop and attachments. One such attachment is a D shaped buckle, and the other is a rivet. Both move freely and have evidence of iron corrosion. The spur has no discernible decoration.
As well as the iron corrosion providing evidence for attachments, Clark (2004) also suggests that to stop spurs from rusting and to enhance their appearance, they were gilded with tin. An example of this type of spur can be found on the PAS database under WILT- 07742E. Interestingly, the sides of the spur are rather short, and do not hold a notable angle unlike other types of rowel spurs. An illustration from "London Musuem medieval catalouge" (Ward et al. 1975) page 111, No.6 which dates to the 15th century AD.
