Coin 1: A silver sixpence of William III, (1694-1702). Obverse: GVLIELMVS III DEI GRA; laureate and draped bust right. Reverse: 1696 MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX; crowned cruciform shields. First bust, early harp, large crown. Spink no. 3520.

Discussion:

The coins are a discreet group found together and in similar condition and therefore likely to have been deposited together at some point soon after 1697. Examples of similar Treasure cases include 2016 T560 and 2015 T989.

As the coins are close in date and they were found within a short distance of each other, this group of coins probably represents either the contents of a dropped purse or a small hoard.

Consequently, in terms of age, association and as the coins contains a minimum of 10% precious metal they qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
