A cast copper alloy Post Medieval asymmetrical mount with integral lugs, dating to the 17th century.
The mount is formed from a flat piece of copper alloy and can be described as cordate in plan. The main body has tapered sides with a vertical indentation at the upper edge of the mount and a rounded terminal with a transverse collar at the opposing end. There are two integrally-cast lugs for attachment at the reverse face of the mount. These are formed from a stem that is broad at the plate and then tapers to a rounded point. Both lugs have been bent. The mount has a mid-green coloured well developed patina across all surfaces.
Read (2001) illustrates a number of similar mounts all dating to the 17thcentury (page 37, most notably No.324). They were used to decorate leather belts, straps or harnesses. Many similar mounts have been recorded on the database (HAMP-0C35E3) discovered in Hampshire and (CORN-CAE6C1) discovered in Cornwall are both of the same form.
The mount measures 22.67 mm long, 10.64 mm wide, 3.1 mm thick and 4.43 mm thick (including the lugs) and weighs 2.5 grams.
