An incomplete copper alloy, probable Military Buckle frame or strap fitting of the Roman period, probably dating from c. AD 100 - c. AD 400.
The object is broadly D shaped in plan and broadly square in section. One end of the object is rectangular with a rectangular perforation (slit) in the centre. The buckle is decorated with two incised grooves evenly spaced at the top and bottom of the rectangular slit. Beyond the slit is a broadly D shaped loop with two scroll like projections, the scrolls curve towards the inner edge of the buckle loop, these do not form a complete circle, and terminate in a point. Between the two projections is a narrowed or recessed piece, this may have been used to hold the pin, now missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The outer edge of the buckle loop has been decorated with evenly spaced traingular depressions. The outer loop at the end of the object is narrowed slightly compared to the other rectangular end and the rest of the frame, this is probably as a result of wear from the pin. The reverse is flat and undecorated.
The object measures 54.5 mm in length and is 53.0 mm wide. It has a thickness of 7.0 mm. The rectangular slit measures 34.3 mm in length and is 4.7 mm wide. The top inner scroll has a broad diameter of 8.4 mm and the bottom scroll has a broad diameter of 10.7 mm. The buckle weighs 74.9 g.
The buckle is a mid to dark green in colour with an even patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. A direct parrallel for this object could not be found at the time of recording, however it does bear some stylistic similarities with others recorded on the database including NMGW-E718C4, NMS-6D57AD and NLM-A99243. Suggested dates are tentative.
