A Roman ceramic sherd from a Black Burnished ware (BB1, from Wareham/Poole Harbour, Dorset) vessel, dating c. AD 75-410. A rim sherd probably from a "dog-dish" type vessel. A plain, straight sided rim sherd, of hard fired, dark grey fabric, with a pale grey patch on exterior surface, evidence of burnishing on both the internal and external surface with a single diagonal line perhaps the remnant of a decorative pattern on external surface. Abundant sub-rounded translucent quartz, <1.5mm, rare sub-angular orange/brown iron stone, <1.5mm.
Length: 42.4, Width: 36.7mm, Thickness: 10.2mm, Weight: 19.05g.
The sherd appears to be a fragment of a "dog bowl", Seager Smith & Davies' (1993: 234-235) form 20, which was in use from the late 1st century.
