A Roman ceramic sherd from a Black Burnished ware (BB1, from Wareham/Poole Harbour, Dorset) vessel, dating c. AD 50-150. A rim sherd probably from a small bowl with a diameter of around 8cm, the sherd has a short vertical rounded rim extending imediately from a curved body, burnished and decorated on the external surface, with a cross-hatched or lattice pattern on an unburnished band below the burnished rim. A hard fired fabric, with buff oxidised internal surface and grey core. Common sub-rounded translucent quartz, <1mm, frequent mica flecks, rare sub-angular orange/brown iron stone, <1.25mm.
Length: 27.3mm, Width: 29.4mm, Thickness: 8.2mm, Weight: 6.96g.
The sherd appears to be a fragment of a small bowl, Seager Smith & Davies' (1993: 234-235) form 32, which would give a mid first to early second century date.
