A complete post-Medieval silver-gilt dress-hook (c. 1500-c. 1600). Treasure case no 2017 T153. Read Class D, Type 6.
This clasp has a notched trefoil back-plate to which a separate hook and bar attachment loop has been soldered on the reverse. Soldered on to the front are three hollow hemispherical bosses, each decorated with a pair of single strand 'rope-twist' filigree wire circlets. Between each pair of circlets, on the inner side, is a granulated pellet. A concave circular element at the centre is held in position by a dome-headed split pin which passes through the centre of the back-plate, between the three bosses. The front of the concave element is hatched. The rectangular attachment loop on the rear face has a maker's mark in the form of an 'X'. The tapering re-curving hook on the rear face of the dress-hook is circular in cross-section. There is gilding at the front and rear.
17.9mm (length); 14.3mm (width); 7.4mm (thickness); 9.0mm (thickness including attachment loop); 12.4mm (thickness including hook); 11.9mm (width of attachment loop); 2.3mm (depth of attachment loop); 1.9mm (maximum diameter of hook). Weight: 3.52g.
Compare with a similar dress-hook from Godshill, Isle of Wight: Treasure case no. 2012 T297 (PAS: IOW-6CD1A5). Also, compare with Read 2008: 81, ref: 272.
A similar example from Staxton, North Yorkshire is discussed by Gaimster et al 2002:163, fig. 5.
