An incomplete lead post medieval button dating to the period c. AD1600 - 1700. About half of the button and its shank are missing. The button is circular in shape with a flat back and convex front, which is decorated with cross and a large pellet in each quadrant, these abutting an outer border, all moulded in high relief. A row of pellets runs down each arm of the cross, with a final larger pellet on the border at the arm's terminal. Each pellet is seperated from the next by a fine raise line. On the border these pellets are flanked by transverse raised lines (in line with the arms of the cross) and a cross-hatched pattern runs along the border between them. The reverse is undercorated, with evidence of a integrally cast shank at the centre.
The fragment is 31.4mm long, 21.6mm wide, and 6.8mm thick; it weighs 13.10g.
Similar examples can be found in Read 2005, pg 62/63, nos. 240, 244 which he dates to the 17th century. However this example is much more decorative. In particular the very fine raised lines decorating the cross arms are much more reminiscent of Medieval nummular brooches
