BUCKLE

Unique ID: PUBLIC-B3C3E6

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete cast copper alloy spectacle buckle frame. The buckle has a flat base and a convex profile. Only one half and the pin remains, the second loop only has stubs left. The strap bar has a rounded projecting knop at each end. As it narrows it appears to wrap over the frame, having the effect of pulling in the 'waist'. The outer edge of the frame is decoratively moulded with a large circular protrusions, incised with a groove for the pin.

The copper-alloy pin is complete and wraps around the strap bar.

There is a grey-green patina on the buckle.

Whitehead (1996, 65) illustrates a similar examples (no. 401 and 405), which is dated from c.1550-1650.

A number of similar buckles have been recorded on the PAS database, including SUSS-BE1664, SUSS-54BEC4, CORN-9F5F6F, CORN-F96F87, DUR-0B8A11, DUR-0A36C2.
