A Medieval copper alloy folding strap clasp, probably dating to AD 1350-1450. The frame is composite, largely made of sheet copper alloy worked into a sub-hexagonal shape, with the upper and lower bars of the frame bowing outwards with a slightly angular curve. There is an offset spindle at the far end of the frame, this has a circular cross section and is a seperate piece. Wrapped around the spindle is a sheet of copper alloy forming the closing plate, this is shaped to fit the frame, and covers around 2/3 of the aperture when closed. This sheet also has some simple decoration in the form of two parallel, inwards pointing triangular notches cut into each side. The strap bar is slightly narrowed on one edge, and around it is wrapped a rectangular plate, with a single in situ copper alloy, seperately made rivet at its far end.
Length of frame: 20.0mm, Length of plate: 43.6mm, Width of frame: 19.1mm, Width of plate: 14.1mm, Thickness of frame: 4.3mm, Weight: 11.25g.
Whitehead (2003: 41) illustrates a number of similar examples (nos. 235-239) which he dates to AD c.1350-1450.
