RETOUCHED FLAKE

Unique ID: SOM-8A31DD

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A collection of six retouched chert flakes of probable Bronze Age date (c.2350-1600 BC) . Two of the flakes, are tertiary retaining no cortex, while the remaining pieces retain between 5 and 25% of their cortex. All of the ventral surfaces, have large bulbs of percussion and strongly defined, closely spaced conchoidal ripple marks idicative of the use of a stone hammer. All the flakes are broad, with evidence of short sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch running along one mesal edge, probably for use as scrapers. One (top right in photo) has long parallel semi-abrupt retouch around the curved edge and is definitely a scraper.

The chert ranges in colour from a dark grey with dark reddish-brown inclusions to a light grey with cream inclusions and a light yellow with considerable dark reddish-orange banding. The whole assemblage weighs 116g

Notes:

This group was discovered in a field that contained one Palaeolithic handaxe (SOM-8D4799) and Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age material. Tools including scrapers (e.g. SOM-F31D27 and SOM-8A747B ) and microliths (SOM-F4905D), blades (SOM-85B209), flakes and cores (e.g. SOM-F45741, SOM-207114) that can be identified to one period or other have been recorded separately but much of the debitage has been grouped across periods.

There was also a lot of unworked flint and chert from liming in the field.
