A thin gold finger ring of probable Roman date c. 4th - 5th century AD. The band is 'D' shaped in section. The outer band is decorated with transverse hammered depressions that reach only to the centre of the ring band, and not across the entire surface. They are arranged in an alternating pattern, giving the impression of a 'zig-zag' design when viewed in plan. The ring is bent out of shape.

Dimensions: weight: 1.37g, length (at longest point)/diameter: 21.12mm, width of band: 1.0 mm, band thickness: 1.42mm

There are no exact parallels on the database, though a ring of similar design can be found (NMS-03E2C3) which is thought to be stylistically Roman in date. Nina Crummy has suggested that this ring is late Roman in date. There is a much more similar item documented in Crummy 1981, pg48, catalogue number 1766, dating from c. 320 - 450AD.

In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 - SUBJECT TO CORONER'S INQUEST
