Treasure case 2017 T121: Acquired by North Somerset Museum Service

Description: A complete Medieval gold 'stirrup' finger-ring (c. 1200-c. 1300).

The hoop is a flattened D-shaped in cross section with a flat inner side and slightly convex outer. The ring thickens evenly at the shoulder while staying the same width to create a triangular bezel (seen in profile) which projects forward from the main hoop. At the apex of the triangle is a recess holding an irregular shaped green cabochon gem in a simple collet. The faces of the triangle are slightly recessed towards a central line running from the apex to the base. Each shoulder has similar decoration on the top in the form of two contiguous raised vegetal motifs, one above the other. These motifs have a short stem and an oval boss. The bosses are decorated with punched decoration giving them the appearance of clusters of granulation. which may represent a vine and grapes or a mulberry.

Dimensions: The ring is 13.9mm long by 6.0mm wide and 4.9mm thick including the catchplate, 1.6mm excluding it; it weighs 0.79.

Discussion: Stirrup shaped rings were most popular in this form in the 13th century although they can be as early as the mid-12th century (Oman 1973: 19-20, pl. 15 b and c. Other examples with similar motifs on the shoulders include Basford (2015) IOW-5E7555 2015 T940, which is particularly similar, McLean (2011a) ESS-831C60, 2011 T252 and McLean (2011b) ESS-98F924, 2011 T213. The former two of which also have green stones while the latter is lacking its stone.

Conclusion: The ring appears to consist of over 10% precious metal and be over 300 years old at the time of finding and as such qualifies as potential Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
