FLANGED AXEHEAD

Unique ID: LVPL-378CA9

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper alloy (bronze) short flanged axe of Middle Bronze Age dating, probably of the Acton Park or Taunton metalwork assemblage and dating from c.1500 to c. 1350BC.

The blade of the palstave is sub-triangular in plan, with a convex cutting edge measuring 35mm in width and 3.5mm thick. In profile the blade is sub-triangular with the widest section being before the stop ridge. The stop ridge is further along the body of the axe on one face than the other. The blade (measured from the cutting edge to the stop ridge) is 95mm in length.

The rear part of the axe (from the stop ridge to the butt) is sub-rectangular in plan. The septum (the area between the flange facets and the stop ridge) is 37mm in length and 21mm in width. The flanges have been worn down during antiquity and more recently due to abrasion from within the plough soil. The butt end is rounded and measures 16mm in width and 4mm thick.

Only on one face of the object within the base of the septum a small amount of olive green patina remains. The majority of the object is a mid-brown to green colour with patches of corrosion and pitting due to abrasion from within the plough soil.

Dimensions: 130mm in length, 36mm in width, 20mm thick, 221.30g
