A silver-gilt possible fragment of a brooch. The object is sub-conical, the tip surmounted by a small knop. A large circular opening in the body connects two of the flatter sides; one of the other sides displays crude carved floral decoration, with a patch of green corrosion where it may have joined another piece of metal, and the final side has carved decoration and small impressed dots. The base shows signs of a break and is hollow.
Dimensions:
Height: 9 mm
Width: 7 mm
Thickness: 6 mm
Weight: 0.76 g
Discussion: Presumably this piece is the base of a pin from a Post-Medieval annular brooch which would have attached to the hollow bottom; see Treasure case 2011 T112 (DOR-E58964) from Stoke Wake, Dorset, for a more complete example. The decoration is consistent with 16th and early 17th century dress accessories.Treasure case 2017 T114: a possible Post-Medieval silver gilt brooch frag
Notes:
Conclusion: Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
Subsequent action after recording: Submitted for consideration as Treasure
