Report on potential Treasure for H M Coroner

Treasure Number:2017T112

Find Spot: 'Maryport Area', Cumbria

PAS Database number: LANCUM-3C7098

Period: Roman, 3rd century

Museum interest: Senhouse Roman Museum, Maryport

Description: A complete Roman gold and garnet finger ring dating to the Roman period, probably dating from the 3rd century AD. Octagonal with raised bezel, the ring has a rectangular section hoop. The shoulders are slightly expanded and the bezel part is rectangular in shape, giving the finger ring an overall flat-oval shape. The bezel is decorated with a tear shaped garnet, set within cell created from reserve metal.

Discussion: This is a ring of well-known Roman type, octagonal with raised bezel, and there are parallels from Piercebridge (NCL-914391) and the Wall region (cf Barbara Birley and Elizabeth Greene, The Roman Jewellery from Vindolanda Research Report NS IV Fascicule V Beads, Intaglios, Finger Rings, Bracelets and Ear Rings (Vindolanda Trust 2006) pp,123-4 and fig.3.3, SF300) which contains a hexagonal inscribed cornelian and is dated as from the 3rd century, but could be slightly later.

A garnet of the same shape but in another form of gold ring dated 2nd-3rd century comes from afrom a cremation burial at Cologne (cf K├Âlner Jahrbuch 5 (1960-61) p.63, illustrated in Kathy Sas and Hugo Thoen, Schone Schijn/Brillance et Prestige (Leuven 2002) p.145 no.18).

Dimensions:

Length: 17.5 mm; Height: 10.6 mm; Width: 17 mm; Thickness: 1 mm; Weight: 6.24 g

Conclusion: Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
