An incomplete lead or lead alloy steelyard weight of probably the Roman period, dating from c. AD 43 - c. AD 410.
The object is biconical in form and is lozenge shaped in section. The sides of the object taper steeply out at the top then curve to form a ridge and begin to taper towards a wide rounded point at the base forming the biconical shape. The remains of an iron suspension loop is present at the top of the object, formed of two circular sectioned iron lugs. There is evidence of post depositional damage in the form of indentations, pitting and scratches on the surface of the object. Black shiney patination is present on the lower part of the weight, probably the result of post depositional damage.
The object measures 39.1 mm in diameter and is 36.5 mm in length. It weighs 159.3 g (5.62 oz).
The object is a mid grey in colour with an uneven patina. Abrasion caused by movment whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. Other examples of this type of weight have been recorded on the database including YORYM-1D9563, KENT-EC3742, LVPL-8D6A24, DENO-1717F9 and DENO-7C103B.
