Copper alloy coin weight, square. The obverse bears the hand of Antwerp (upright) with a "9"(?) to the left of the hand and a "0" to the right (for 1590), and an "H" below the 9 on the left. The H will be the maker's initial - presumably there should be another to the right of the hand, although this cannot be seen. P&BR Withers (1995) list two Antwerp coin weight makers with the first initial H - Hans Foncq., 1577-1603 and HW, an unknown 16th century maker. The reverse shows a crowned shield possibly containing a lion (?), with lettering around, possibly O(?)HO trefoil IRE trefoil ... trefoil ... trefoil. The weight weighs 1.99g, equivalent to 30.71 grains (1g = 15.4324gr). This could be a very light & worn weight for a half angel (40 gr = 2.59g). Alternatively it could be a slightly heavy weight for a quarter ryal (30gr = 1.94g), although these coins were only issued in the reign of Edward IV, 1464-1470. Length 15.12mm, width 14.85mm, thickness 1.41mm.
