A complete copper alloy post medieval crotal bell dating to the AD 1600 to AD 1700.

The bell is spherical in cross section with a rectangular suspension loop at the top. In the top half of the sphere, there are two perforations which have been cast out on either side of the loop. Around the circumference, there is a raised ridge. The lower half of the bell has a long canal opening ending in a perforation at each end, below the circumferential ridge. The decoration appears to be in the form of the sun burst design. This is clearly visible on the lower half of the hemisphere but less so on the top. The elongated petals all have radiating lines inside, creating a leaf like image. The petals "expand" from the canal opening on one side, but on the other is plain type cross inside an irregular three sided shield like shape. This is surrounded by the sun burst petal design. The iron pea is present.

The bell is 32.04mm in diameter, and with the loop included, the height is 37.04mm. The bell weighs 36.56g.

Blunt "Crotal Bells" suggests that crotal bells that only have decorations on the lower hemisphere tend to be of a later date (late 18th century to mid 19th century) and the sun burst design is not uncommon during the post medieval period.
