FINGER RING

Unique ID: WAW-9E8A93

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Description: A gold posy finger ring; a heavy broad band with a D-shaped section, plain exterior and inscribed interior with a lower case inscription reading 'Keepe faith till death'. There is no sign of a maker's mark.

Dimensions:

External diameter: 23.05mm

Internal diameter: 18.24mm

Thickness: 4.85mm

Weight: 9.9g.

Discussion: The absence of a maker's mark makes precise dating difficult. The style of the lettering is 17th Century although it continued to be used into the 18th century. Compare for instance the inscription on a hawking vervel found in Angmering, West Sussex (2017 T10; SUSS-D17951) likely associated with James I (r.1603 - 1625).

The same inscription is found on other posy rings which were reported under the 1996 Treasure Act, for example 2012 T564 and 2005 T137, and on a ring in the collection of the British Museum (1961,1202.102) which is broadly dated c.1650-1750.

Dame Joan Evans traced a reference to the message 'Keepe faith till death' to a will proved in 1622 (Evans 1931: 64).

Notes:

Conclusion: On balance of probability, the ring is more than 300 years old and as it is made of precious metal, it appears to meet the criteria for 'Treasure' under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996.
