Medieval seal matrix, of Medieval date (c. 1300 - c.1400 AD). The copper alloy seal matrix has a circular die, with a tapering handle. The handle has a hexagonal cross section, and terminates with a sub-oval suspension loop, which has a collar beneath. There are no marks on either of the six sides to aid orientation during use.
The device depicts a squairrel sat on its haunches, facing left with pointed ears.
The inscription is set outside an incomplete linear border, and reads * PRIVE SV which translates as 'I am private'.
The surface of the matrix has a mottled dark green/brown coloured patina. The matrix measures 17.28mm diameter, 20.69mm long and weighs 6.6g.
The seal matrix dates to the Medieval period, probably 14th century. After c. 1300 smaller impersonal circular-based seal matrices are more common (Harvey and McGuinness; 1996).
