RAZOR

Unique ID: PUBLIC-889594

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Copper-alloy broad-bladed handle and part of the iron blade from a twin bladed triangular razor. The handle is 56mm in length and 47mm in width, with a maximum thickness of 6.5mm. The handle takes the form of the head and neck of a griffin, with the head turned backwards. The handle is basically triangular in plan, with a semi-circular recess removed from the lower edge of the handle. Both sides of the handle are decorated in the same manner. The iron blade was secured through a slot in the handle. The iron blade is corroded, but this is not too extensive.

Boon cites a similar example from Narona, Dalmatia now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Boon suggests that razors of this type were most likely to be used for trimming beards. This is a very fine example whose decoration is well-defined. Two similar examples have recently been recorded from Lincolnshire, although the griffin on these examples is not so well executed as the Bishopstoke example and there is little trace of decoration surviving on either of the Lincolnshire examples.
