Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy gilded disc plate brooch, dating to the period AD 200-350. It measures 40.13mm in diameter, and 13.11mm at its thickest. The brooch is incomplete insofar as the pin is missing and the very edge is damaged in places. There is a small circular knop in the centre, measuring 5.84mm in diameter. There is a small hollowed recess at the centre of the knop, but it is unclear if anything was set within this recess. The small knop is surrounded by a slight circular recess, measuring 12.33mm in diameter. Outside of this recess but contained within a concentric rim (measuring 21.04mm in diameter) are traces of what now appears to be possibly gilding, in a dark blue colour. This rim is contained within a further concentric rim, 31.42mm in diameter, which also has this dark blue colour to it. There are small lozenge shaped incisions running around the diameter of the concentric rim. The outer rim has some damage to the side, but is otherwise complete and is red in colour. In this outer rim the lozenge shaped incisions are also present.

The reverse, which is very likely to have been wite metal coated, has no discernible decoration, but the patina is very smooth and shiny. The colour is largely light green, except around the lugs of the catchplate, which are dark green. The brooch weighs 15.66g in total.
