Copper alloy brooch fragment. Hod Hill brooch, Mackreth type HOD HILL 1.a. A head comprises plain tubular wings rolled forward to receive an axis bar [probably lost], with a central slot for the pin [also lost]. A slightly tapered strip bow has three central longitudinal ridges, the central one billeted, which extend to a straight end with a horizontal ridge below it. The foot of the brooch tapers below this, and its end is lost. The top of the catch plate remains on the back of the upper foot. The display face bears extensive traces of white metal plating, which is thought to have characterised many brooches favoured by the Roman army of the 1st century AD, and specifically for brooches of this type, by the XX Legion. Suggested date: Early Roman, 50-100.
