An incomplete cast copper alloy D shaped single loop buckle dating to the period AD c.1250- AD c.1400.

The frame of the buckle narrows and has an off set and narrowed pin bar. The front edges of the buckle expand and is broadly D shaped. The plate of the buckle is not integral to the frame, instead, there are two attachment loops which wrap around the back edges of the frame with a single rivet which is located closely to the two attachment hoops. The pin survives.

Overall, the buckle is 17.32mm in length (excluding pin), 18.48mm in width and weighs 2.59g.

A parallel to this buckle can be found in Whitehead (2003) "Buckles" page 19, No. 22. Both share the same frame and plate attachment design, but compared to the parallel there is no evidence of further rivets and guiding on the plate. According to Whitehead (2003), this, and other buckles manufactured in this period were utilised for personal dress, and the reason why the frame was designed it such a way, is because it provided a better, and tidier fit.
