Cast copper alloy 'waisted' double-loop (also known as'Figure of eight' or 'spectacle') sub-oval buckle frame. The buckle has a flat base and a convex profile. The strap bar has a rounded projecting knop at each end decoarated with in a floral pattern incised with three lines. As it narrows it appears to wrap over the frame, having the effect of pulling in the 'waist'. The outer edges of the frame are decoratively moulded with a large circular floral protrusions, again incised with three lines.

The copper-alloy pin is broken at the distal end, whilst the proximal end wraps around the strap bar. Evidence of corroded iron is apparent at the proximal end, indicating possibly an inner iron core around which the pin was wrapped.

The grey-green patina on the front of the buckle is largely corroded and only partially surviving; the patina is better preserved on the reverse.

The frame measures 52.8mm long, 26.3mm wide and is 2.77mm thick. The strap bar is 26.86mm long and 4.1mm thick. The pin is 21.72mm long and 4.7mm thick.

Whitehead (1996, 65) illustrates a similar example (no. 401), which is dated from c.1550-1650. Marshall (1986, 14) also lists a similar example (IIIC 43) from the same date range.

A number of similar buckles have been recorded on the PAS database, including SUSS-BE1664, SUSS-54BEC4, CORN-9F5F6F, CORN-F96F87.
