Copper alloy strap fittings. Three similar objects found close together; the finder credibly suggests all were attached to the same item of military equipment or webbing, since decayed.
Each object has a flat U-shaped plate with nine drilled holes around its edge, and is folded - in two cases with a narrowed tab and in the third with a tab the same width as the plate - to terminate with a concavo-convex stud bearing a stamped Crown Imperial. The overall length of the smaller items is c.29mm and the larger is c.41mm long.
The following comment was received: 'These objects belong to imperial German uniforms and date to the First World War 1914-18. The were part of the Feldrock (tunic) M 1910 or later (depends on Material and Form, I cannot discuss this now in depth). They were sewn into the Feldrock on the back c. at the waist. There were two of these hooks and they were needed to hold the belt (Koppel) which was quite heavy and got heavier with parts of equipment attached. Later exemplars of these hooks (Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany) were simpler in form. I assume that these objects found their way over the Channel with PoWs...'. This comment was kindly offered by a Continental authority, who prefers that his contribution remain anonymous given its informality. This reporter and his colleagues would, however, wish to leave their gratitude to him on record. Our interpolater corrects an initial identification of the objects as related to web equipment from the Second World War.
