Incomplete Late Saxon copper alloy open sheath or U-sectioned cover containing part of the side of an iron stirrup. The face is decorated with broad transverse grooves alternating with incised lines. The intact integral terminal comprises a highly stylised animal head with part of one side missing. The other end of the sheath is broken. Extant length 50mm. Width 11mm. Thickness 9mm. Weighs 14.15g. A few other examples of such sheaths have been recorded, e.g. SF-97D5B1, LIN-E4D022, NMS-E2EB8, SUR-51D12B and Gurney 2005, fig. 9 G. 11th century.
