Copper alloy plate brooch. Cast lugged disc plate brooch with eight knops [one lost] equidistantly spaced around its rim, cf. Mackreth type British Plate type 5a. The flat plate has a grooved border and a low outer circumferential rib; a further pair of grooves and a central hole of diameter 2.7mm may all relate to a separate central boss, now lost. Paired lugs on the back were for a hinged pin [lost] with a small folded catch plate opposite. The display face bears extensive traces of white metal plating. The use of plating relates this to 1st-century brooches favoured by the Roman army of occupation. The floruit of such brooches was probably 2nd century, and they had largely fallen out of use by the late 3rd century. Suggested date: Roman, 100-200.
