A complete copper-alloy zoomorphic mount possibly of Roman date. It is oval in shape gradually decreasing towards the bottom of the mane. The front of the face is convex highly raised and moulded to form a simple lion's face consisting of eyes, muzzle, ears and mane. The underside is hollow with the remains of an iron stump which has corroded from the middle to one side. This may be the remains of the attachment rivet. The mount is worn and corroded obscuring the finer details of the face. The mount is 46.6mm long, 38.9mm wide, 1.9mm thick (14.2mm at rivet) and weighs 46.44 grams.
Several lion-headed mounts were found in excavations at Skeleton Green, Hertfordshire, in association with mid 1st to 2nd century burial caskets (see Borrill in Partridge 1981: 314-318). Other lion heads are recorded on the PAS database include BH-02F2E4, BH-570C17, BH-0DE347, SF-0096E3, SF-5AC647 and SF-8319.
