NUT CRACKERS

Unique ID: CORN-61C0E5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete arm of a cast copper alloy nut cracker with a curved handle, semi-circular in section, and turned arm, round in section, consisting of five transverse moulded ribs that are 1 mm in thickness, and terminating in a collar, that is 3 mm in thickness. Beyond the collar there is a break where the arm would have continued and this pattern would have repeated before the arm tapered towards the crushing box for the nut. The box would have been made up of two chamfered levers held by a circular hinge with a cylindrical pin. The arm has patches of black lacquer remaining which would have coated the copper alloy and protected it from corrosion.

Walker (1994) illustrates similar examples of nutcrackers on page 138, which are dated from the Victorian period.

Bailey (1993) illustrates a similar nutcracker with bowed handles and turned collars on page 41, no.5, which is dated from the late 18th century.

See record CORN-F3E887 for a similar nutcracker.
