An incomplete copper-alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, Western Group, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 5.b4.Plate 50, dating to the period AD 50-150. It is incomplete insofar as the pin has broken after 22.88mm length. The brooch measures 39.83mm in length and 16.72mm at maximum wingspan. The coil at the reverse of the brooch has a break in it, which may be sign of repair and reuse. The pin which extends from the coil has been broken. The wings are D-shaped in cross section and have pierced lugs. They are 5.59mm in thickness. At the top of the bow there is a forward facing lug with a circular hole, 2.04mm in diameter. This leads down to a rectangular ridge with pointed edge, 9mm in length. This is also based on a further triangular ridge, which runs parallel to the edge of the bow, 1.43mm from the edge. There is a recess between the triangular ridge and the remainder of the bow. The bow tapers to 2.86mm wide, at which point there is a ridge across the width of the bow. The brooch extends for 2.49mm in length and tapers in towards the reverse of the brooch. The terminal knop extends out towards the face by 1.97mm. The catchplate is complete. In total, this brooch weighs 7.24g.
