A complete post Medieval copper alloy shoe or knee buckle dating to the period c.AD 1660-1720, with drilled frame and seperate chape. The buckle frame is broadly retangular, with the outer edges on the two narrowest sides expanding into central triangular projections, that are flanked by two small rounded knops. Two incised grooves 0.76mm wide that run along the narrowest sides, behind the triangular projections. The longer edges (top and bottom) have a central knop flanked by concave scrolled decorations that form the side.

In profile it is curved with the centre raised and the central knop on the top and bottom sides is thickened and drilled to take the iron spindle. The spindle has a cast copper alloy pin and chape on it. The pin has a cylindrical end which the spindle goes through from which projects a broad rectangular sectioned pin. The chape also has a broad cylindrical base which the spindle goes through. This base is the entire lengh of the spindle with a slot in the centre for the pin. From the base the chape extends into a triangular plate which has an old break at the end. On the back of the chape is a makers mark, an indented rectangle with raised letters H (H) or possibly R H.

It is 46.02mm long with a maximum width of 31.19mm, and 2.13mm thick with a weight of 15.02g.

Whitehead (2003) illustrates a very similar buckle with a complete chape (page 100, No.629) which he dates to c.1660-1720 AD.
