An incomplete copper alloy Roman Colchester type brooch dating to the 1st century AD, missing the catch plate and pin. The brooch consists of the bow which is sub triangular in shape, and narrows to a point at the foot. The bow is oval in cross section. The bow curves then flattens towards the head. Only a tiny part of the catch plate remains, the is triangular in shape. The wings at the head of the brooch are very worn, and are flat and rectangular, projecting from either side of the bow. Behind the wings is the remains of the spring. This is attached by a circular loop, and is a coiled piece of copper alloy wound round to create the spring. This has been damaged and is worn and broken. There is no decoration on the brooch, and is a dark brown colour with patches of light green patina. The brooch measures 48.8mm in length, 23.7mm at maximum width, and weighs 11.31g. The brooch is similar to Hattatt 2000, page 296, number 14.
