A post medieval coin weight for a quarter laurel (5 shillings) of James I (1603 - 1625) Third Coinage (1619-1625). The weight is square shaped in plan with chamfered edges. The obverse has a crown over the value mark 'V S' (5 shillings) set between three fleur-de-lis contained within a beaded circle. In the top left hand corner of the weight is a crowned 'I" countermark. The reverse shows a bearded laureate crowned bust facing left. The reverse beaded circle has over struck the flan.

A full weight for a quarter laurel was 35 grains but weights were made for the legal minimum weight of the coin which was slightly less. This coin weight is 32 grains.
