Description: An incomplete cast silver clothes fastener broadly corresponding to Read's Class A, type 12. The fastener is preserved intact, though the hook on the rear face of the object is partially broken and distorted in old damage. In plan it takes the form of a fleur de lis, with a rectangular aperture in its projecting front edge, behind which are two circular attachment holes.
Date: c. 1600-1700 AD.
Dimensions: the fastener measures 26.24mm long, 21.60mm wide at its widest point, and 1.32mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 3.94g.
Discussion: For a parallel fastener dated to the 17th century, see Read (2008) p. 181, no. 693.
The object contains more than 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
