Description: A gold finger-ring in the form of a belt looped through a buckle. The ring's bezel is designed to appear like the tip of the belt passes through the buckle, up and around the interior of the hoop (which also is decorated with the buckle pin and belt loop) and back up through itself to form a loose knot, with the end protruding above the buckle. The rest of the exterior of the hoop is decorated in a floral motif with each side of the ring mirroring the other. The interior of the ring is inscribed in Roman capital letters 'ALTRO+NON+CHEADO'. Several of the letters retain black enamelling.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 20.7mm, Height (at belt tip): 7.1mm, Weight: 6.5g
Discussion: The inscription, in Italian, roughly translates as 'I don't ask for anything else', and is intended as a message of love for the recipient of the ring. Rings of this general design are known as early as the 14th century (cf. OA.7468 in the collection of the British Museum) but similar examples reported under the Treasure Act include one found in Newent, Gloucestershire (Treasure case 2009 T135; GLO-244613) inscribed TIME.TRIETH.TRVTH and dated to the 17th century, and another found in Edgefield, Norfolk (2007 T359; NMS-411415). Inscribed 'TOVT+PAR+AMOVR' that ring was dated to the late 16th/early 17th century and acquired by Norwich Castle Museum.
Notes:
The age and precious metal content of this ring meet the criteria for Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996.
