Object type certainty: Certain

Cast copper alloy double-loop, trapezoidal buckle with moulded outer edges consisting of two outer lobes at each end of the buckle on either side of a pointed triangular projection. The pointed centre of the edge of each loop is engraved with a notch, for the pin to rest on. There is an engraved transverse line across the upper surface of each outer edge of the frame at the base of and at right angles to the pin notch. The pin bar is narrowed and flush with the frame, with a small knop on either end. The pin is missing and one side of one of the loops is broken. The inner edges of the two sides of the frame are chamfered and the outer edges are also straight-sided.

The buckle frame is 42 mm long and 27 mm wide and 2.5 mm in thickness. The pin bar including the lobes is 20 mm long and 2 mm wide.

Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar buckle on page 84, no.524, which is dated from c.1620-1680. Another was found in a 17th-century context at Pontefract Castle (Roberts 2002, 274, fig. 112, no. 14).
