An almost complete copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon wrist clasp of Hines form 18d.

The object consists of a rectangular bar with flattened row of four conjoined projections that give it a castellated appearance. It is slightly curved in profile. The bar has multiple moulded transverse grooves along the front/inner edge, separated from the attachment edge by two vertical parallel grooves. The outer (attachment) edge has the remains of four rectangular crenelations, each with a large punched ring and dot motif on their front face. At the centre of the plate are three evenly spaced circular sewing holes positioned between the crenelations and ring and dot motifs. From the centre of the straight edge projects an incomplete rectangular attachment loop which is broken in the centre. The back face of the clasp is flat and undecorated, and the entire object has a mid-green patina.

Dimensions: 31mm in length, 12mm in width, 2mm thick, 4.65g

The integrally cast outer edge with conjoined castellated appearance indicates that this example probably belongs to Hines' Form B18d and is very similar to one published by Hines from Bury St Edmunds (Hines, 1993: 60-61, fig. 115a). Hines notes that this group is typically East Anglian in origin and of probable 5th-6th century AD date (Hines, 1993: 60-61).

Similar examples which can be found on the PAS database include SF-1E79ED, YORYM-5EF9AD and NMS-308A58.
