FINGER RING

Unique ID: HAMP-FDC75C

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A fragment of gilded silver or gold late medieval finger-ring, consisting of part of the bezel and part of the hoop. The breaks are relatively fresh.
The bezel was probably originally oval or circular. It is decorated with three D-shaped petals extending equidistantly from a central pellet, a diagonal groove between each pair. Presumably this was originally a quatrefoil/ four-petalled flower. The design is within a pair of grooves which flank the original surviving edges of the bezel, which is flat. The hoop curves upwards from its break (where it is D-shaped in cross-section, being flat to the inside surface) into the shoulders and bezel.
The finger-ring measures 12.3mm in length, 11.3mm in max.width (at the bezel break, 1.0mm) and 2.7mm in max.thickness (where the bezel joins the hoop). The break at the hoop measures 2.4x1.2mm. The fragment of ring weighs 1.04g.
