An incomplete Roman copper-alloy equal-ended plate brooch (bridge type) dating to AD 100-200.
The pin and spring are missing.
The brooch is broadly pointed-oval in plan, with the arched plate tapering towards the top and bottom. The terminal, at the head, projects at an angle of roughly 90 degrees from the bow. Behind this terminal there is a single pierced lug, now incomplete. The pierced hole has a diameter of c. 1.8mm. The catch-plate at the bottom is incomplete and the curled-over part that secured the pin-tip is missing. At the front the bow is decorated with two sets of three horizontal parallel ridges, one at the top and one at the bottom. Between these two features, at the centre of the bow, a raised rectangular border contains six evenly spaced circular cells (three over three). These cells may have contained enamel. However, none has survived. The rear face of the bow is flat and plain.
This brooch is green with patches of a slightly darker green patina. The breaks are old.
Length: 32.3mm; width: 9.5mm; thickness at centre of bow: 1.9mm; length of bow: 20.2mm. Weight: 3.06g.
A similar brooch from Dorchester, Dorset has been published by Hattatt (Hattatt 1989: 148, fig. 69, ref: 1602).
