STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: HAMP-A9F6D8

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete early post-medieval copper-alloy strap fitting from a sword belt hanger, dating to the period 1500 to 1700. It consists of a incomplete hooked plate. The strap fitting is missing its hooked end and has broken across a rivet hole. Originally this would have been one of a trio of plates, which would have hung from a mount with three suspension loops. In turn, scabbard straps would have been attached to the plates.

The plate is triangular in shape with a trefoliate terminal. It is decorated with an elaborate scrolling foliate pattern with fronds to either side from a central stem, reaching into the trefoliate end. A rivet hole in the terminal is now filled with iron corrosion and measures c.6.09mm in diameter. The plate measures 20.09mm in length, 12.18mm at maximum width, 1.39mm at the least wide point. It also weighs 5.36g.

Such fittings are rarely found complete, rather elements or broken examples are far more common. An illustration of another complete sword-belt fitting can be found in Read (2001, 43; fig. 26, ref. 373). Such fittings 'proliferate in the 16th and 17th centuries' (Geake 2001, 35). A similar parallel can be seen on the database in record: HAMP-D36B34. Their design and decoration are relatively standardised.
