A Post Medieval copper-alloy heart-shaped, half penny trade token from Milton dating from AD1667. Williamson (1889 no. 414). Issued by William Baldwin in Milton

Obverse: WILLIAM.BALDWIN. = HIS HALF PENY

Reverse: IN.MILLTON.1667 = Two fleurs-de-lis

Notes:

Copper alloy trade tokens were first struck in 1648. In 1656 half penny tokens were introduced. 1674 by Royal decree production of trade tokens ceased. Pers comm Verity Anthony

Williamson (1889:376) writes "There are three Miltons in Kent, one near Canterbury (a very small place), one next to Gravesend, and the other near Sittingbourne. Of the first we have no proof that any tokens were issued there. Of the second several tokens read next gravesend, and the church registers of the last metion the names of several issuers; these have been placed under the heading Milton-next-Sittingbourne, to which town they belong."
