Treasure Case 2016 T1016.
Description: Gold finger ring of medieval date. The bezel is square in plan and trapezoidal in cross-section. It is set with a dark red step cut gem, probably a garnet. There is a small nick on one side of the bezel. The shoulders project from either side of the bezel and taper to the bottom of the loop.
Dimensions: Diameter: 17.5mm (internal diameter: 14.6mm), height: 20.6mm, thickness: 1.7mm, weight: 2.2g.
Date: c. AD 1200 - 1300.
Discussion: A number of similar examples have been reported as Treasure and are recorded on the PAS database, including: . ESS-FBAFF7 (2013 T226), KENT-470813 (2010 T609), BERK-825BE7 (2009 T585) & SOM-138A64 (2014 T441)
A similar example is depicted in a portrait of Elizabeth I, reproduced in Oman (1974, pl. 1, A & B). However, Oman notes that the style is typical of examples known from the 13th to 14th centuries (Ibid, pl. 14 - 16).
The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently, in terms of both age and precious metal content, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
