A complete but squashed silver die stamped cufflink element of 17th Century dating.

The cufflink element (one quarter of a pair of cuff links) consists of a single disc or cufflink elements, with a concave reverse. The disc is circular in shape, with bevelled edges. A sub circular loop is present on the rear. The front has been die stamped with a crown. Two hearts are below.

Similar examples can be found from Shropshire (2015 T582; WMID-479F23), Warwickshire (2014 T743; WMID-7848F8), Norfolk (2014 T319; NMS-1F8FB6) and Cambridgeshire (2014 T284; BUC-0D17F4). This design is believed to be a reference to the marriage of Charles II (1660-1685) to Catherine of Braganza in 1662.

As the disc is squashed, the original diameter can not be measured. It currently has a length of 15.8 mm and a width of 17.1 mm. It is 4.6 mm thick (including the loop). The metal is 0.8 mm thick. It weighs 0.9 g.

Notes:

The object has been made of silver and is over 300 years old. Consequently they qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
